CALIFORNIA COAST - 1971

I moved to the Bay Area for graduate school. Having spent my previous life on the east coast, the opportunities to experience open space initially seemed endless. These images convey a sense of peace and solitude that unfortunately didn't exist. California was crowded, even in 1971. Reaching each of the destinations involved a competition with an boundless number of people with the same goal. It's sobering to realize that the population has doubled since I took the photographs.
