The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness in northeastern New Mexico is the quintessential BLM site, beyond the middle of nowhere. There are no trails, just a sign that welcomes you to walk anywhere you want, but please remember to come back. Every square yard of flat country is covered with cow tracks, cow feces and tumbleweed. Fortunately, there are many square yards that aren't flat with sculpted hoodoos and canyons. The distinctive red sedimentary layers are permeated with fossils.
