In the late 80s, the security of the free world hinged on moving scientists interested in intense charged-particle beams to the Tuscan hills and feeding them well. Accordingly, for two weeks I found myself at a conference at an all-inclusive resort. To avoid the sessions and the injury-prone soccer games organized by the European participants, I found an escape route and spent the time exploring the environs. These photographs show my favorite destination, the hilltop town of Barga.
